Hall's Janusick, Storm make their way to state cross country meet

AURORA — Scott Janusick did it on his own two feet. The Bureau Valley Storm relied on one another, as they always do, in Saturday’s Aurora 1A Regional cross country meet.

Janusick, a Hall sophomore, placed fourth with a time of 15 minutes and 18.3 seconds to punch his ticket to this week’s IHSA state meet in Peoria. He will be joined there by the Storm, who placed third as a team to secure their trip to state.

Bureau Valley was paced by the 13th-place finish of senior Joe VonHolten (15:33.8). The Storm also gained a 27th from sophomore Nathan DeVenney (15:51.9), a 28th from freshman Derrick Johnson (15:52.5) and 32nd from senior Tevis Mott (16:00.3) and a 58th from freshman Ryan Johnson (16:32.5) to score 132 team points.

No. 2 ranked Westmont slipped past No. 1 ranked Winnebago 99-125 for the team title. Sterling Newman (147) and Ottawa Marquette (172) gained the other two qualifying berths.

“We’ve got the top two-ranked teams in the state, so I’d say third place is a pretty good finish,” BV coach Dale Donner said. “We think we got some room for improvements, here and there, but our times today we’re very impressive. We think we had four guys right around 16 minutes. The course is fast today. It’s not like they can cut corners anywhere here. Through the forest and around the lake. We’re very happy with our times. If we can turn around and run them next week, I think we’ll like our outcome.”

“We wanted to see how close we could get to Winnebago,” Mott said. “I think we were only seven points, and that’s not much of a margin, I think we were really right with them. I don’t think they realize how close we are.”

“The whole team ran real well. We ended up having four guys 16 and under, so that was tremendous. It will definitely take at least that on Saturday.”

Janusick ran his race right on schedule. He was seeded fourth and finished fourth.

“I kind of expected top 10 to give myself a chance for state,” said Janusick, who received a big hug from his father, Jeff, after his race. “Nick Skromme was ranked behind me, but he got me today. It doesn’t really matter because I enjoy racing him. Races clean. I can’t wait to race him at state, again.”

Janusick overcame some tendonitis in his left ankle he first developed on a practice run at the Aurora course and sat out the last couple days of practice.

“I woke up this morning and felt pretty good. Glad I could have a good race and give myself a chance at state,” he said.

Hall coach Tom Keegan said Janusick made himself the runner he is during the offseason.

“He’s got natural ability, no doubt it, but he also works very hard to develop it. What he gets today, he deserves every bit of it,” Keegan said. “To get down there as a sophomore is a tribute to what he’s done in the offseason.”

Hall junior T.J. Mosbach had the fifth fastest time of all local competitors, but was unable to advance. He clocked a 15:54.6 to finish 30th, but was more than 21 seconds off the pace needed to move on.

The Red Devils finished well out of the running, 13th place out of a field of 20 full teams.

Princeton’s Zach Kieffer was next through the chute following BV’s Mott with a season’s best 16:25.2, good for 56th place.

In the girls’ race, freshmen Elizabeth Mosbach (18.55.5) of Hall and Emma Makransky (18:56) of Princeton both gave good races, placing 24th and 25th, but fell well shy of the 18:36.8 needed to advance. Both wanted to run their best times and finish in the top 25.

“I felt really good. It was my best time, so I’m really happy about that,” Mosbach said.

Diversions don't bother Hall runners
By Jim Dresbach

SENECA — A couple of last-minute diversions didn’t bother Hall cross country runners Scott Janusick and Elizabeth Mosbach.

A course change due to excessive rain and a gear bag snafu didn’t stop the pair from recording memorable Class A regional runs at Seneca.

With Janusick’s championship run Saturday in a time of 16:38.3, a male Red Devil runner has now won the individual regional title the past two years. In 2007, Mike Miroux was the regional medalist, but 2008 belonged to Janusick as the Red Devil conquered 66 other runners and a course change that eliminated an even muddier run through the Seneca FFA farm woods.

And through mud, standing water, slick 90-degree turns and a relay-like effort with a pair of forgotten spikes from the Mosbach family, Elizabeth Mosbach got the opportunity to literally dig in for a second-place individual finish.

Janusick will advance with his teammates to the Aurora Christian Sectional, while Elizabeth Mosbach and St. Bede runners Szymon Ligas and Lucy Stanke qualified for the sectional trip to Aurora.

The Hall running combo of Janusick and T.J. Mosbach shadowed Ottawa Marquette’s Nick Skromme during the first half of the race. The strategy caught the OMHS runner a bit by surprise, and he surmised the Hall runners had comprised a different strategy than earlier races, when the Crusaders dueled the Running Red Devils.

“Earlier in the year, I thought they would go out too fast,” Skromme said of the Hall runners. “The last time we raced, Janusick and I were talking during the race, and we stayed next to each other. That kind of surprised me because we were so close together. In this race, they (Janusick and Mosbach) made sure they stayed behind me.”

Janusick finally shook free of Skromme with a half mile remaining to race and defeated the Marquette runner by nearly 11 seconds with a 16:38 clocking. Mosbach was third in 17:12, and despite not running at 100 percent, Kyle Miroux (18:52) offered the Red Devils valuable team points with a 20th place finish.

“Since it rained and they took out the woods section, I’ve never run the new course before,” said Janu-sick, who ran the first two miles in 11:08. “It helped watching the girls’ race, so you knew where to go.

“I wasn’t expecting to win this. I was hoping for a top five to get me to sectionals and then to state.”

Also advancing as part of the team are Hall’s Brett Herrmann (27th) and Austin Pelszynski (29th).

SBA’s Ligas completed the regional run in 18th place in a time of 18:28 to grab one of five at-large individual sectional spots.

Hall’s Saturday started with a walk-through tour of the rural Seneca course, which was pelted by rain on Friday, but pre-race preparations also revealed an omission in Elizabeth Mosbach’s gear bag.

“I got here to the race, and I got to the starting line. I looked through my bag, and my spikes weren’t there,” Elizabeth said after her runner-up finish in a time of 20:31.8. “We had to call my dad to make sure he brought my spikes. A minute before the gun, my brother, T.J. comes running up with my spikes. I hurried and put them on.”

Not slowed by the mix-up, Mosbach stayed in the lead pack, which posted a 7:21 first mile split. Through the three miles of mud, Mosbach was determined to stay on her feet and out of trouble.

“You just had to take careful steps,” Mosbach said of the course. “Back (on the far end of the loop) was all puddles. You either ran around them, or you went through the mud. You’d take a step and just sink in.”

Mosbach finished second to Aurora Christian’s Sarina Oleson who galloped to the finish line at a 20:23 pace.

Janusick leads field at regional

SENECA — Hall sophomore Scott Janusick did not think winning the Class 1A Seneca Cross Country Regional would be easy, but he sure made it look easy Saturday.

Janusick stayed in the lead pack the first 2 ½ miles, and in the final 800 meters, he picked up his pace to win by 11 seconds.

“I couldn’t believe that I did it,” Janusick said. “Coming into it, I knew it would be hard, but I didn’t think it’d be quite like that. I figured I’d have to basically dive for line to have a chance at winning it.”

Janusick completed the 3-mile race in 16 minutes, 38.3 seconds.
