Hall senior catcher Erin Polte had never beaten Putnam County in
her three years of playing softball for the Lady Devils. Her bat
pretty much took care of that in crunch time.
With Hall trailing by four runs entering the bottom of the sixth
inning, the Lady Devils went on to tie the game up, and a Polte
single with the bases loaded then gave her team a go-ahead two-run
lead en route to a 7-5 non-conference victory over the Lady
Panthers in Spring Valley.
“I believe we haven’t beaten Putnam County in about 15 years,” Polte said. “That was a big win. That was exciting.”It sure was.
Hall trailed 5-1 when Polte led off the sixth inning with a walk,
and after a Sara Smoode single and a Cally Kowalski walk, the sacks
were packed. Junior Claire Faletti then delivered a single to left
field, scoring Polte and Smoode as Hall put a dent in the Putnam
County lead, which sat at 5-3 with runners on the corners for the
Lady Devils.
“They hit the ball. Give them credit,” Putnam County head coach Chris Walker said of the Lady Devils. “I think if we make the routine plays, we get out with very little bleeding and we’re OK.”
