BLOOMINGTON — Saturday afternoon Hall junior Nick Rounds had his head up and he was smiling. He posted the same 9-over 81 score during Saturday’s second round of the IHSA Class 1A Boys Golf State Meet that he shot Friday. Saturday’s 81 just felt a lot better than Friday’s 81.
“For some reason, I feel like I played better than yesterday,” Rounds said Saturday. “The bogeys were more spread out, and that kind of made me feel like I played better. I finished so bad (Friday) that it just made me feel like I shot 100. The bogeys were more spread out (Saturday). I hit some good shots; I hit some bad shots; and I hit some real bad shots. Overall, I feel like I played a little better.”

Rounds had one birdie, eight pars, eight bogeys and one double bogey Saturday at Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington. His 36-hole score of 162 put him in 46th of the 105 golfers that started competing Friday.“It’s not quite as high of a finish as I would like, but it’s experience and I expect to compete for a high finish next year,” Rounds said. The 36-hole score Rounds shot this weekend is the best 36-hole score by a Hall boys golfer at the state meet since Jim Thompson posted a 156 in 1996. Thompson is the only Hall boys golfer to have a better 36-hole score at the state meet in the last 32 years than Rounds posted this weekend. Thompson shot a 157 in 1995 along with his 156 in 1996. Rounds finished with his score of 162 despite back-to-back days where he struggled putting. Rounds said he had between 26 and 32 putts during 18-hole rounds this season prior to state. He had 37 putts Friday and 37 putts Saturday.
