SPRING VALLEY — A scary thought for area golfers: Hall’s Nick Rounds might just be getting started. The Red Devils golfer is just a sophomore and the best of his golfing may not have been achieved just yet.

Rounds finished the year with an average of 41.22, but the highlight of the season was the Putnam County Regional where the Red Devil finished with an 18-hole score of 78 to win the individual title.

“Nick is a very talented golfer,” Hall coach Craig McConville said. “If he continues to work hard, he can be a very good golfer. He is only a sophomore and is already playing above his years.”

The Pizza Hut Classic is held in Kewanee and is one of the best tournaments in the state year in and year out. Rounds placed third in the tournament out of 122 golfers.

“That is a very good tournament, and for Nick to step up and place third shows just how talented he is,” McConville said.

Just before having the success at the Putnam County Regional, Rounds came into the NCIC tournament leading all golfers having the most points, 55, in the entire Lincoln side.

With the NCIC being split up this season, players were awarded for their outstanding golf for all the conference matches, and not just the tournament.

In five conference matches Rounds placed first three times, third, and fourth once.

Rounds had a solid day at Deer Valley Golf Course where he shot an 86, which was good for third highest total for the Red Devils.

Combine that NCIC Lincoln tournament and his play during the regular season, and Rounds earned himself All-NCIC Lincoln honors with the second most points, which accounts for regular season and tournament totals.

A week later is when Rounds and company converged on the Putnam County Regional at Edgewood Golf Course.

Not only did Rounds beat the competition, but he led his Red Devils teammates to the Putnam County Regional championship as the team scored 334 points.

“Nick Rounds really played well, that day, at Edgewood,” McConville said. “Over the course of the season, he was at the top of our team standings most of the time and just keeps getting better and better.”

From there, Rounds and his Red Devils teammates went to familiar grounds as the sectional tournament was hosted by the St. Bede Bruins, which also happened to be Hall’s home course, as well.

The Bruins sectional was one of the tougher sectionals in the state, and that was crystal clear as the Red Devils scored one stroke better than their regional score, which was 333.

“We can’t complain, that’s for sure,” McConville said. “We had a better day than at regional, but we ended up in 6th place as a team. I am very proud of what Nick and the entire team accomplished this year.”

At the St. Bede Sectional, Rounds shot an 84 which was tied for second best on the Red Devils squad, but it was not enough to advance to state.

“He has two years left to worry about state,” McCon-ville said. “There is no doubt in my mind that he is going to get better and better

Hall had four, five, and sometimes all six golfers shooting in the 40s for the 2007 golf season. That kind of golf led to the regional championship, and it put three members on the All-BCR team for the 2007 season.

Adam Doll, Jr, (Hall): The Hall junior is a big hitter who puts himself in a position to succeed. Doll finished sixth at the Putnam County Regional, with an 82, to help the Red Devils capture the regional title.

“He is a very strong guy,” McConville said. “He really stepped up big and helped the team out a lot this year.”

At the St. Bede Sectional, Doll was tied for third on the team with a score of 84, but that is where the Hall season would end. Hall finished sixth in the talented sectional field.

Tyler Hackman, Sr, (St. Bede): Hackman led the Bruins all year long with a nine hole average of 43.7. Hackman just missed out on sectional last year and then, in the winter, he had to recover from a serious leg break to even get back to the golf course.

“He was disappointed last year missing advancing by one stroke,” Bruins coach Rich Cummings said. “He really battled back from that injury and achieved one of his goals by getting a score of 83 at regional.”

Cole Hewitt, Sr, (BV): The Storm senior was voted a unanimous All-Three Rivers selection with an average of 42.1. Hewitt had four matches where he scored a 38 and placed 13th at the Pizza Hut Invite.

“Cole was a great leader, out there,” Storm coach Charlie Yelm said. “He drove some of the younger kids to practice and even designed and made the hats that we wore as a team.”

Hewitt was also a sectional qualifier scoring an 84 at the Putnam County Regional to lead all Storm golfers.

Phil Scott, Sr, (Hall): The Red Devil senior showed his teammates what can happen when you are determined to excel. Scott carried a nine-hole average of 41.96 in 2007, second only to teammate Nick Rounds, the Player of the Year.

He placed 10th at the strong Pizza Hut invite, and followed that up with a second place at the NCIC tournament, which earned him All- NCIC.

“Phil has a very nice game and is about as determined as anyone I have ever seen,” McConville said.
