CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Red Devils take title in Seneca
By Jeff Armstrong

SENECA — The Hall Red Devils went to Seneca. They played Seneca. And they beat Seneca.

Hall finished its tournament play Saturday night at the Seneca Turkey Tournament with a 44-38 championship win over Class 2A, No. 7-ranked Seneca.

The win however was no walk in the park.

It wasn’t until a Seth Evans air ball with 10 seconds left to go that Hall finally knew it had the game and championship wrapped up.

Clayton Cissell showed his all-tournament skills by leading Hall with 16 points and four rebounds. Cissell made the all-tournament team for the Red Devils, as did Hall senior Ryan Nett.

Korby Kasperski also had a big night for the Red Devils by putting up 13 points and grabbing five boards.

Tournament MVP Evans led Seneca and all scorers in the game with 21 points and eight rebounds.

“We knew we weren’t going to be able to stop Seth (Evans),” said Hall head coach Mike Filippini. “The plan was to do whatever we could against Seth, but really focus on the other players so that when Seth did get in trouble, we were ready to stop the other players.”

Seneca took 41 shots in the game, and 20 of them came from Evans. Hall was able to stop the rest of the team, letting Jordan Sinnott being the next scorer for Seneca with six points.

Hall got out to a good start by outscoring Seneca in the first quarter, but not by much. Hall went into the second quarter up by two and then ended it up by five.

Noel Santiago did his job to extend the lead to eight in the beginning of the third by completing a three-point play. But that didn’t last long as Evans answered right back with a three-point conversion of his own to make it a five-point game once again.

After Santiago’s three-point play, Hall would go on to only score two more points the rest of the quarter. Filippini took the blame for the drought.

GAME 3

Cissell leads balanced attack over Reed Custer for shot at Seneca

SENECA — One thing was really clear Friday night for the Hall Red Devils Friday in the Seneca Thanksgiving Tournament, Hall senior Clayton Cissell did not want to be taken out of the game and let head coach Mike Filippini know about it. And he had good reason to want to stay in.

Cissell had a monster game netting game highs of 25 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Red Devils to a 3-0 start in the tournament with a 65-52 win Braidwood Reed-Custer, and a shot against Seneca Saturday night for the title.

“Oh man, there were a couple of times I had to put him back in just to shut him up,” Filippini said laughing. “He kept telling me before the game that he was going to have a big game and he couldn’t stand coming out even for a second.”

“This is the matchup we wanted,” Cissell said. “Seneca is state ranked and they have Seth Evans who is a Division 1 prospect. We’ll have to be ready for them that’s for sure.”

In order to get the big game against the Irish the Red Devils first had to get past the Reed-Custer Comets.

Hall came out firing in the first quarter doing what they wanted when they wanted. Hall forced several turnovers and getting several stickbacks to jump out to a 21-6 lead after eight minutes of action.

“Korby got off to a nice start,” Filippini said. “He let the game come to him tonight after pressing the first two games.”

Kasperski had six points and Cissell added nine with five rebounds as the Red Devils jumped out early.

“I just love getting stickbacks,” Cissell said. “It’s a great feeling to get those baskets and it really takes some life out of the other team.”

Reed-Custer began to shoot the ball much better in the second quarter, but couldn’t really cut into the Hall lead.

Justin Kunz was 5-6 from the free throw line and then nailed a long three pointer, but Cissell led the Red Devils once again getting eight more points and five more rebounds to have a double-double before the game even got to the halftime break.

At the start of the third quarter hall led 38-24 and were about to take a big punch from Reed-Custer to start the half.

Kunz again was leading the Comets as he hit for 10 points as the Hall lead was cut to 42-37 with a 13-4 run to start the half.

After the timeout Hall’s Kasperski responded with a stickback and after the free throw pushed the lead to 45-37.

That was the start of a 11-0 Red Devils run that gave Hall a 53-37 lead and put them back in command once again.

“That was a big response,” Filippini said. “Reed-Custer had a nice start to the quarter and hit some shots, but for our guys to come back and respond the way they did showed a lot of great senior leadership.”

In the fourth quarter neither team lit up the scoreboard and Hall pulled away for a 65-52 victory. Hall returns to Seneca tonight at 7:30 for the championship game against Seneca.

For the game Hall was led by Cissell’s 25 points, 16 rebounds and Kasperski with 16 points and six rebounds. Ryan Nett and Jordan Petersen each chipped in with eight points for Hall.

GAME 2

SENECA TURKEY TOURNAMENT: Crusaders bedeviled by stifling Hall defense
CHARLIE ELLERBROCK, charliee@mywebtimes.com

SENECA -- What a difference a day -- and an opponent -- can make.
One day after shooting their way past Reed Custer in their season opener, the Marquette Crusaders were brought back down to earth by the stifling pressure from Spring Valley Hall. The Red Devils' aggressive man-to-man defense rotated fresh bodies every three minutes on mainstay Tanner Bland and stepped out to challenge every other MHS shooter.

So successful was that pressure that Marquette not only shot just 26 percent from the field, it actually went scoreless for a 10-minute stretch spanning the second and third quarters. It was during that time that Hall turned a narrow five-point margin into a 45-15 rout, on its way to a 67-30 decision at the Seneca Thanksgiving Turkey Tournament here Tuesday night.
"Well, we certainly went from being the parade marshall last night to being the street cleaner tonight," MHS coach Kevin Schultz said. "Hall just pressured our guards so hard, they just wouldn't allow us to get into any of our offensive sets ... and they're so deep, it was just one big body coming in after another ... At one point we were looking at 20-15, then all hell just broke loose on us. We were scoreless for what? A day and a half? Having those fresh sets of legs coming at you all the time would frustrate anybody.

"As well as we played in all the facets last night -- shooting, defense, boxing out, running plays -- from midway through the second quarter to midway through the third, it was the exact opposite tonight. A five-point game turned into a pretty ugly mess on us in a hurry."
Marquette (1-1) will meet Illiana Christian in its final pool-play game Friday at 6 p.m. needing a win to play for third-place Saturday. Hall, meanwhile, could end up facing the host Irish for the title.

Bland, who had 20 points the night before, was limited to just 10 by Hall, and he only reached that because he was able to get to the free throw line for half those points. His only three-pointer of the game pulled MHS to within 20-15 with 5:57 left in the second period.
Marquette would not score again until a Jordan McDonald bucket with 3:56 left in the third.
By that time, Hall's 6-5 center Ryan Nett had started the 25-0 run with the last four of his 10 second-quarter points. A jumper and two free throws by Korby Kasperski around a three-pointer by Noel Santiago made it 31-15 at the break.

The Red Devils then scored the first 14 points of the second half, another trey by Santiago widening the gap to 45-15 before McDonald broke the spell.

"The halftime speech was that we wanted to come out and bury them, to not let them think they could come back, to finish the game, and that's what we did with that 14-0 run," said Hall coach Mike Filippini. "We shot well, we used our size well and we played good defense, too.
"Tanner Bland is the best shooter in our area and, with the respect we have for him, the whole goal tonight was to make someone else beat us. Every three minutes, we were just putting a fresh body on him to pressure him, to be physical with him and try to frustrate him, and our kids did a great job of frustrating him tonight."

Bland finished 2-of-9 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the stripe, and led the Cru with just three rebounds. Corey Brown added five points and Alex Kuhn and Mason Malpass four apiece as MHS had 22 turnovers and connected on only 9-of-35 tries overall, just 2-of-13 from the arc and 10-of-20 from the line.

For Hall, which shot 43 percent, Santiago led all scorers with 15 points. Nett added 14 and reserve Adam Doll 12, all in the mop-up fourth quarter.

"That (Hall) team is going to have a great season. They're big, they're physical, they play defense and they shoot well," said Schultz. "But do I think they're 37 points better than us? No ... There are just some teams we're not going to match up with well physically, and when that happens, we have to do other things -- take care of the ball, play good team defense and find a rhythm offensively -- well to compete. Unfortunately tonight, we got into a lull where the game just got away from us."

GAME 1

Second half rally earns Hall first win
By Brad Martin

SENECA — Hall coach Mike Filippini is happy to see how his team has grown from last year. On Monday, the Red Devils showed how much by coming from behind in the second half for a 50-45 victory over Lansing Illiana Christian Monday night in the Seneca Turkey Tourney.

Filippini is also glad to have Mikey Miroux and Steffan Marroquin back as well. Miroux took the basketball season off last year and Marroquin decided he didn’t feel like playing as well.

“I am so happy to have those two back this year,” Filippini said. “Mikey brings such energy and when Steffan was in there he got a couple big rebounds and a big basket for us as well. Then with the guys that were here all of last year it is a nice mix of players.”

It took Hall a bit to get things going also as they trailed 27-22 heading into the halftime break.

Ryan Nett hit a free throw and then Korby Kasperski hit a 15 foot jump shot to cut the lead to 31-30 Vikings.

“At halftime we told the kids we had the first game blues,” Filippini said. “I am not sure we even had anybody in double figures tonight so for us to win that means it was a team effort.”

Miroux hit a mid-range job that put the Red Devils a 32-31 lead, but with time running put in the third quarter Travis Kuiper stole the ball and got the layup to give the Vikings a 35-34 lead heading into the final eight minutes of the game.

Hall came out with their guns blazing in the fourth quarter as Noel Santiago, a transfer from the Chicago area, hit one of two free throws and Miroux finished off the fast break to give the Red Devils a 38-36 lead.

Then with the game tied at 38, Ryan Nett converted an old fashioned three point play to put Hall up 41-38 once again.

Then the Red Devils began turning the ball over and making mistakes just like they did in the second quarter. Cody Sells was responsible for six points coming off stick backs to give the lead back to the Vikings at 44-42.

“For some reason we could not hold onto the ball and that really let Illiana Christian take the momentum for a bit in the fourth quarter,” Filippini said. “Luckily we were able to get our composure and finish off the game.”

Miroux finished off the Vikings with two free throws late to take a 50-45 victory in the first game of the season.

Back in the first quarter it was a back and forth affair as the two teams traded punches and before the final bell rung the game was right back where they started, tied. This time at 14.

Nick Kramer hit all three of his shots for eight points and for Hall it was Clayton Cissell with six points and three rebounds.

Then in the second quarter Hall struggled to find the bottom of the net, which is something that the Vikings had little trouble with.

Jordan Brink led the way with five points in the quarter as the Red Devils trailed the Vikings 27-22 heading into the break before Hall came storming back to take the game 50-45.

Hall was led by Miroux with 10 points while Cissell had eight points and 10 rebounds and Nett had eight points as well and five rebounds.

Notes: In the first game of the tournament Hinckley-Big Rock defeated Fairbury Prairie Central 79-62. Hall next plays Marquette at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
