SPRING VALLEY — Sometimes playing on your home golf course can be a big advantage and sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce the way you want.
The Hall Red Devils could not have asked for a better score (333) as they topped last week’s regional title by one stroke, but wasn’t good enough to advance.
Monmouth-Roseville took the team title with 321 on Saturday. That means 12 points separated the first place from sixth place which is where Hall was.
“I thought the guys really played well today,” Hall coach Craig McConville said. “We shot a little better than we did last week, but there was some really good competition here today.”
Phil Scott found out just how close the individual standings were as well as he shot an 81. Kyle McEwen of Aledo was the last to qualify for state with a score of 80.
“I felt really bad for Phil,” McConville said. “He has really worked hard and he came up just one stroke away from going to state.”
Other golfers for the Red Devils included Nick Rounds (84), Adam Doll (84), Jerren Data (84), Cory Spencer (86), and Jake Kelley (95).

St. Bede’s Tyler Hackman was in the middle of things as je shot a 44 on the back and then a 45 on the front to finish the day with an 89 which did not earn him a trip to state either.
“I was hoping that Tyler would shoot a little better,” Cummings said. “You always hope that seniors can get that one big day and make it to state. Tyler was our most consistent golfer all year and he worked hard to get to this point.”
The top eight individuals that were not on the first or second place team that advance to state were Kurt Slattery of Rockridge with a score of 73 followed by Jonathan Hauter of Peoria Christian (74), Martin Tenfalt of Illini Bluffs (75), Zach Rodeffer of West Hancock (76), Colton Lamaster of Havana (77), Broc Kenney of Marquette (78), Curtis Dean of Havana (80), and McEwan of Aledo (80).
The top six golfers included Ben Gillen of Monmouth-Roseville (72), Slattery of Rockridge (73), Hauter (74), Tenfalt (75), Rodeffer of West Hancock (76), Travis Kreiter of Brimfield (76), Colton Lamaster of Havana (77), and McEwan of Aledo (80).
